Brevo Review 2026: Plans, Automation, SMS, and Who It Fits

Brevo is a strong shortlist candidate for a small business that wants email campaigns, forms, lifecycle automation, and transactional messaging in one ecosystem. Its advantage is breadth without immediately requiring an enterprise platform. Its main weakness is that the starting price does not tell you the real cost: monthly sends, stored contacts, contacts entering automations, seats, sales packages, SMS credits, and add-ons can all change the decision.

Our verdict: choose Brevo when several communication jobs genuinely belong together. Compare another platform when your need is narrower, such as a simple creator newsletter, or more specialized, such as deep ecommerce orchestration or a full sales CRM.

The safest way to decide is to map the first month you will actually operate: campaigns sent, contacts stored, people entering automations, teammates working in the account and messages sent outside email. You do not need a perfect forecast—only enough clarity to avoid a pleasant starting price becoming an unpleasant surprise.

Brevo verdict in 60 seconds

Brevo is a good fit when

  • You want campaigns, forms, segmentation, and multi-step automation in one marketing platform.
  • Transactional email through SMTP or API should live in the same ecosystem as marketing email.
  • Your team can map monthly sends, stored contacts, automation contacts, seats, and add-ons before buying.
  • You value email plus optional SMS, WhatsApp, push, sales, and customer-data capabilities.

Compare another option when

  • You only need a simple newsletter workflow and want the lightest possible interface and plan structure.
  • Advanced ecommerce personalization is the center of your marketing stack.
  • You expect Brevo to replace a specialized sales CRM without checking the separate Sales packages.
  • You need predictable international SMS costs before confirming countries, message length, registration, and sending rules.

Important evidence boundary: this review is based on Brevo’s current official pricing, product, help, and developer documentation. We did not run an independent inbox-placement benchmark or claim that every workflow is easier than a competitor.

What Brevo actually combines

Brevo is often described as an all-in-one platform, but that phrase hides several different operational jobs:

Marketing campaigns

Newsletters and promotional campaigns use lists or segments, an email editor, templates, forms, reporting, and send-volume allowances.

Marketing automation

Automations react to triggers, rules, delays, contact data, ecommerce events, and custom events. Some triggers require the Brevo tracker, a higher marketing plan, or an additional Sales package.

Transactional messaging

Order confirmations, password resets, account notices, and similar messages can be sent through Brevo’s SMTP relay or Messaging API. This is a real capability, but it still requires sender setup, credentials, templates, integration work, monitoring, and error handling.

Sales and customer workflows

Every plan includes a basic layer of sales tools. Deeper deal automation, multi-user access, calling, outreach, and conversation features depend on separate Sales packages or higher tiers. Do not assume that paying for a marketing plan unlocks every CRM or sales capability.

Current Brevo plans and the decision each one supports

Brevo’s official English-language plan documentation showed the following USD starting prices on July 18, 2026. Pricing and limits can change, so use these figures as a dated decision point rather than a permanent quote.

Free — $0 per month

Best use: learning the platform and validating a small workflow.

The documented allowance includes 300 email sends per day, storage for up to 100,000 contacts, one user seat, and multichannel marketing automation for up to 2,000 contacts. Unused daily sends do not carry over.

Upgrade trigger: the daily send cap, automation contact limit, branding, or reporting becomes operationally restrictive.

Starter — from $9 per month

Best use: regular email campaigns without the Free plan’s daily sending limit.

Starter scales through monthly email volume and contact-storage tiers. It adds features such as web push capacity, global data feeds, and one conversion metric, while some items remain add-ons.

Upgrade trigger: unlimited automation contacts, A/B testing, advanced reports, a landing page, or additional marketing seats becomes necessary.

Standard — from $18 per month

Best use: a growing small business running repeatable lifecycle campaigns.

Standard adds unlimited contacts in marketing automations, A/B testing, advanced reporting, AI send-time optimization, one landing page, and the option to add up to three marketing seats.

Upgrade trigger: high send volume, ten included seats, deeper ecommerce and data features, contact scoring, or additional channels justify the large jump to Professional.

Professional — from $499 per month

Best use: high-volume, multichannel teams with more advanced ecommerce, data, analytics, and collaboration requirements.

The documented starting level begins at 150,000 monthly email sends and includes ten seats, ten landing pages, contact scoring, AI segmentation, advanced ecommerce capabilities, inbound webhooks, and expanded support.

Decision warning: this is not a casual upgrade. Compare the annual operational value against a specialist stack before accepting the price jump.

Enterprise — custom pricing

Best use: organizations needing custom volumes, unlimited contact storage, multiple business units, stronger security, service commitments, tailored onboarding, and advanced data control.

Decision warning: request a written scope covering volumes, support, account structure, security, data, and every required add-on.

Brevo’s five official plans and starting prices, captured from the Brevo Help Center on July 18, 2026. Prices and limits can change.

The five cost drivers that matter more than the headline price

1. Monthly email sends

Paid plans are tiered by monthly email volume. Start with an actual campaign calendar and average audience size, not an optimistic estimate.

2. Stored contacts

The email volume selected also sets contact-storage limits for Starter and Standard. Brevo documents automatic tier upgrades for some lower contact tiers when the limit is exceeded, which can increase the subscription cost.

3. Contacts entering automations

Free and the lower feature set limit marketing automation to 2,000 contacts. Standard is the important comparison point when unlimited automation contacts affect the business case.

4. Seats and Sales packages

A marketing subscription and a sales operating model are not the same purchase. Additional Standard marketing seats, Sales Essentials, and Sales Advanced are separate cost decisions. Map who needs access and which actions they must perform before selecting a tier.

5. SMS, WhatsApp, and add-ons

Brevo does not offer one flat SMS plan. Credits are purchased separately, starting in packs of 100, and the required credits vary by destination country and message length. Registration, sender identity, quiet hours, consent, and opt-out rules also vary.

How capable are Brevo automations?

Brevo’s current documentation supports a broader answer than the generic label “basic automation.” Available triggers and actions include list changes, forms, email engagement, ecommerce activity, website visits, custom events, delays, contact updates, messages, webhooks, and starting another automation.

The important limitation is context. Ecommerce triggers require the Brevo tracker. Deals, meetings, conversations, and some one-to-one actions depend on Sales packages. WhatsApp automation is plan-gated, while loyalty and some data capabilities are reserved for higher tiers.

A practical evaluation should therefore use one workflow the business will maintain, for example:

Form submitted -> welcome email -> delay -> engagement condition -> follow-up -> sales handoff

Brevo belongs on the shortlist if the required triggers exist, the team can supply the necessary data, and the resulting workflow remains understandable after several months. The length of the feature list alone does not prove operational fit.

Transactional email: valuable, but not automatic

Brevo documents two main transactional paths:

  • SMTP relay: connect an application or email client using a dedicated SMTP key.
  • Messaging API: send static, dynamic, or template-based transactional email using an API key or OAuth and a configured sender.

This can reduce the number of messaging vendors in a stack. It does not remove the implementation work. Someone still owns sender configuration, template logic, credentials, application integration, event webhooks, retries, and the separation between promotional consent and essential service messages.

If no developer or platform owner can confirm that path, do not buy Brevo primarily for transactional email.

SMS: useful extension, variable economics

Brevo supports SMS in many countries, but support does not mean identical cost or deployment. The official documentation says:

  • SMS credits are purchased separately rather than through a flat SMS plan;
  • the cost depends on the destination country and message length;
  • marketing messages can be subject to country-specific sending hours, opt-in requirements, sender registration, and carrier rules;
  • transactional and promotional SMS may follow different restrictions.

Before making SMS a deciding factor, calculate the country mix, normal message length, monthly volume, and compliance work. If those numbers are unknown, treat SMS as an optional capability rather than a reason to choose the platform.

Deliverability: Brevo provides controls, not a universal outcome

Brevo provides domain authentication using Brevo code, DKIM, and DMARC, with automatic or manual setup depending on the domain provider. It also documents sender configuration, logs, and dedicated-IP options.

Those controls are important. They do not prove inbox placement for a specific sender. Consent, list hygiene, complaint rates, content, sending patterns, volume changes, and domain reputation still matter. We therefore do not assign Brevo a deliverability score without a controlled independent benchmark.

Which small-business profile fits Brevo best?

Choose Brevo for a multichannel small-business communication hub

Brevo is most compelling when campaigns, forms, lifecycle automation, and transactional messages share contacts and data. Standard is likely the meaningful comparison tier once automation and reporting become part of daily operations.

Compare MailerLite or Kit for a newsletter-first workflow

If broadcasts, subscriber growth, and a small number of straightforward sequences are the entire job, a lighter newsletter platform may require less configuration. Compare the real workflow rather than buying unused breadth.

Compare ActiveCampaign for automation-led lifecycle operations

If complex branching, CRM-style lifecycle logic, and automation maintenance drive the purchase, run the same workflow in both products and compare the plan required to support it.

Compare Omnisend for ecommerce-first messaging

If store events, ecommerce segmentation, and channel coordination are central, compare Brevo’s required tier and tracker setup with an ecommerce-focused platform.

Compare GetResponse for funnels, webinars, and conversion assets

If the desired system also needs funnels, webinars, landing pages, and conversion journeys under one vendor, compare the complete operating stack rather than email features alone.

Final decision

Brevo is worth shortlisting when a small business wants email marketing, automation, and transactional messaging to share one ecosystem. The platform becomes less convincing when “all-in-one” hides a narrow newsletter need, a specialized ecommerce workflow, a deep sales CRM requirement, or uncertain international SMS economics.

Before choosing a plan, write down five numbers: monthly sends, stored contacts, automation contacts, user seats, and required countries/channels. If those numbers point to Standard or Professional, compare the total annual cost and workflow against the most relevant specialist before committing.
